Check out this update from our local Riverside BIA!

Riverside Mural Launch is Aug 27th

Riverside has a new mural! Please join in our free community celebration on
Sunday, August 27th.

Let us know you’re coming!
https://riverside-2017-mural-launch.eventbrite.ca

‘Tkaranto Past/Tkaranto Future’, was created by Indigenous artists Odinamaad (Isaac Narcisco Weber), and Chief Ladybird (Nancy King), along with Indigenous youth and traditional knowledge keeper Philip Cote. The artists’ creation is rich in symbolism, stories and connections – from intricate designs rooted in nature, to the feather holding Toronto’s urban setting.

Experience the mural, hear from Traditional Wisdom Keeper Philip Cote and local BIA and political reps, meet the artists, and enjoy Indigenous food, live music, dance and craft workshops. Activities will include Traditional Drumming and singing by Shandra Spears Bombay, Hoop Dancing by Nimkii Osawamick, and Medicine Pouch craft workshop by Tammy Enosse.

This Cultural Hotspot SPARK project was made possible by support from the Government of Canada, City of Toronto, StreetART Toronto, Riverside BIA, Government of Ontario. Thanks also to Woodgreen Services and  Sherwin Williams.

To Whom It May Concern,

Re: Donations to the 7th Annual Rivertowne Community Barbeque

The Rivertowne Safety 1st is a resident collective which is comprised of Toronto Community Housing women-leaders dedicated to making a positive impact in their community. The group accomplishes this goal by leading and supporting programs and events in the community; including: breakfast program, children’s after-school program, annual holiday appreciation event, community clean ups, Black heritage celebration, and the annual barbeque. Since forming, Safety 1st has experienced programming success and formed key partnerships and relationships with Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Police Services, Ralph Thornton Centre, and the City of Toronto Parks, Recreation and Forestry department, as well as local businesses.

For the past 6 years Safety 1st has organized a summer BBQ event to support community engagement, neighbourhood integration, residents’ access to services, and to connect residents with local service providers and businesses in South Riverdale. The event is always well attended with over 400 residents participating.

This year’s event will be held on August 19th at 50 Matilda Street. Rivertowne Safety 1st is seeking your support and would appreciate any contributions your company/organization can make in the form of gift certificates, supplies, food and/or financial donations to help purchase items desperately needed to make this year’s celebration a success. Safety 1st is prepared to leverage their partnerships and reach to ensure residents are fully aware of the businesses/organizations that made the annual BBQ a success.

Your generosity will go a long way to help the residents of Rivertowne feel they are remembered and supported. As a valued member of South Riverdale please consider making a contribution to make this event a special one for everyone.

Reminder About Bylaws for Outdoor Business Signs

Outdoor sidewalk signs are a great way to get noticed and promote your business. However, did you know there are rules to having a sign? The Toronto Municipal Code (Chapter 693, Signs) lay out requirements for businesses, particularly:

  • Every business displaying a portable sign (e.g. A-Frame) must first obtain a permit to do so (693-21)
  • Your permitted sign must be located on the public property (e.g. the sidewalk) adjacent to your business
  • Your sign must allow for an unobstructed pedestrian clearway of a minimum of 2.1m
  • No more than one portable sign can be displayed for a business
  • Your sign can only be displayed during your business operating hours
  • Sign size must be between 0.5m and 1m in height, and no wider than 0.6 m

This reminder is being sent as the Riverside BIA has received complaints from local residents related to business signs obstructing sidewalks. While anyone can file a complaint with the City’s Municipal Licensing and Standards office, it is important for businesses and residents to work together in efforts to resolve disputes prior to involving authorities. Having great business-community relations is what makes Riverside a great place to live, work and play, so please be respectful of the rules and please work with residents and each other when these issues arise.
